FAQs

How long does it take to get an India eVisa?

The Indian government eVisa portal has a hard minimum SLA of 4 business days. Most applications are approved within 4–5 business days. We recommend applying at least 7–10 days before your travel date to account for any document correction requests. Apply no later than 4 days before arrival — applications closer than 4 days cannot be processed.

Do I need an in-person interview for an India eVisa?

No. The India eVisa is entirely online — no embassy visit, no in-person interview, and no mailing your passport. You complete the application online, submit your documents digitally, and receive the approved eVisa by email. Simply print it or show it on your phone upon arrival.

What if my passport expires soon — can I still apply?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you submit your eVisa application, and must have at least two blank pages for stamps. If your passport expires within 6 months, renew it before applying for the India eVisa.

Can I extend my stay in India beyond my eVisa validity?

No. The India eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible once issued. If you wish to stay longer, you would need to depart India and re-enter on a new eVisa (if eligible) or apply for a separate long-stay visa through the Indian consulate. Overstaying your visa requires clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs before you can exit India.

Can I work in India on a tourist eVisa?

No. The tourist eVisa strictly prohibits employment, paid or unpaid work, missionary or NGO activities, journalism, or research. Working on a tourist eVisa is a serious violation that can result in deportation and future entry bans. If you plan to work or conduct business activities, you must apply for the appropriate business or employment visa.

Which airports and ports can I use when entering India on an eVisa?

India eVisas are valid only at designated international airports (including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Ahmedabad among others) and certain seaports. Crucially, eVisas are NOT accepted at land border crossings. If you plan to cross into India from Nepal, Pakistan, or Bangladesh by land, you will need a standard consulate-issued visa.
