Vast steppes stretching to the horizon, snow-capped Altai peaks, the sweeping Gobi Desert, and centuries-old nomadic culture — Mongolia is one of the world's most untouched and awe-inspiring destinations. U.S. citizens can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, making it one of the most accessible adventure destinations on earth. From eagle-hunting festivals to sleeping in a traditional ger under a sky full of stars, Mongolia rewards the curious traveler.

How it works

  1. 1
For US citizens: confirm your travel dates and passport validity — no advance visa application is needed for stays up to 90 days.
  2. 2
Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (Ulaanbaatar) or another designated entry point. Receive your entry stamp on arrival.
  3. 3
Register with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within 48 hours of arrival. Hotels do this automatically — independent travelers must register via e-Mongolia or at an immigration office.

FAQs

Do US citizens need a visa for Mongolia?

No — U.S. citizens can visit Mongolia visa-free for up to 90 days under a bilateral agreement in place since 2014. You simply arrive, receive an entry stamp, and register with immigration within 48 hours. No advance eVisa or consulate appointment is required.

What is the 48-hour registration requirement?

All foreign nationals in Mongolia — regardless of their visa status — must register with the Immigration Agency of Mongolia within 48 hours of arrival. If you are staying at a hotel or guesthouse, the property registers you automatically. If you are staying in a private home, ger camp, or self-catering accommodation, you must register yourself online at e-Mongolia (e-mongolia.mn) or in person at an immigration office. Failure to register is an administrative offense that can result in a fine.

Is Mongolia safe to visit?

The U.S. State Department rates Mongolia as Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) — the lowest advisory level. Mongolia is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are traffic accidents in Ulaanbaatar, petty theft in crowded areas, and health considerations in remote regions (limited medical facilities, extreme weather). Travelers venturing into remote steppes or mountains should hire experienced local guides and carry satellite communication.

What is the best time to visit Mongolia?

The ideal travel window is June through September, when steppe and desert temperatures are mild and major festivals take place — including the Naadam Festival in July (horse racing, archery, wrestling). Winters are extremely cold (down to -40°C / -40°F) and best avoided unless you are an experienced cold-weather traveler. Spring and autumn can be beautiful but unpredictable.
