TL;DR

CLEAR and TSA PreCheck solve different problems: CLEAR gets you through the ID check line, PreCheck gets you through the security screening line. Using both together is the fastest way through any checkpoint — but each one is useful on its own.

Why this matters

If you’ve ever stood in a long checkpoint line that seems to move in two phases — first a line to hand over your ID to a TSA officer, then another line to actually go through the scanner — CLEAR and PreCheck attack those two phases independently.

Most travelers focus on one or the other. Once you understand what each actually does, the right choice — or the case for stacking both — becomes clear.

How CLEAR works

CLEAR is a private membership service operated by Alclear. When you enroll, you submit your fingerprints and an iris scan. At the airport, a CLEAR ambassador walks you to a biometric kiosk where you verify your identity in seconds — no ID card needed. You then go directly to the front of the document-check line.

What CLEAR does not do: it doesn’t change your screening experience at the scanner. You still put your bag on the belt, remove your shoes (unless you have PreCheck), and wait in whatever queue exists for the scanners.

CLEAR is genuinely fast at the ID step. At a major hub during peak hours, the document-check line can run 10–15 minutes. CLEAR makes that step take about 60 seconds.

How TSA PreCheck works

TSA PreCheck is a U.S. government program. Once approved, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you add to your airline profiles. When the TSA PreCheck indicator prints on your boarding pass, you use the dedicated screening lane where:

  • Shoes stay on
  • Belt stays on
  • Laptop stays in the bag
  • 3-1-1 liquids bag stays in the bag
  • The line is shorter and moves faster

PreCheck does nothing at the ID check step — it only affects what happens once you reach the scanner. According to TSA, 99% of PreCheck passengers wait under 10 minutes.

The “stack them” case

Stacking CLEAR and PreCheck gives you the fastest possible path through both steps:

  1. Walk past the general ID check line to the CLEAR kiosk — 60 seconds.
  2. CLEAR ambassador escorts you to the front of the PreCheck lane.
  3. Shoes on, laptop in bag, through the scanner in under 2 minutes.

Total checkpoint time on a busy day: 3–5 minutes. Without either program on the same day: 30–45 minutes is common at major hubs.

The math makes the most sense if you fly frequently from big airports. If you fly three or four times a year from a small regional airport, the lines may already be short enough that neither program pays for itself in time savings.

How to get CLEAR free

CLEAR Plus at $199/year is the sticking point for most people. Here are the main paths to free or heavily discounted membership:

American Express Platinum and Business Platinum cards — both cards offer an annual CLEAR Plus credit that covers the full $199 fee. If you already hold one of these cards, your CLEAR membership is effectively free.

Delta SkyMiles — Diamond Medallion members get a complimentary CLEAR Plus membership. Platinum Medallion members pay a discounted rate (around $109 as of 2026). Other Medallion tiers get modest discounts.

United MileagePlus — United offers discounted CLEAR rates to MileagePlus members.

Other credit cards — several co-branded airline cards and premium travel cards include CLEAR as a benefit. Check your card’s current benefits before paying full price.

If you have an Amex Platinum or Delta elite status, the real cost of CLEAR is $0. In that case, stacking it with your existing PreCheck is a no-brainer.

Common pitfalls

  • Assuming CLEAR = PreCheck. They do different things. CLEAR without PreCheck still sends you through standard screening. PreCheck without CLEAR still has you waiting in the ID check line.
  • Enrolling at a CLEAR kiosk during a rush. The first-time enrollment takes about 5 minutes and requires a staff ambassador. Do it on a low-traffic day or use the app to pre-register.
  • Not checking if your airport has CLEAR. CLEAR is at 50+ airports, not all of them. Verify at alclear.com before counting on it for a specific trip.
  • Letting your credit card benefit lapse. The Amex Platinum CLEAR credit resets annually. If you cancel or downgrade your card, you’ll owe the full $199 at next renewal.
  • Using CLEAR at a venue only. CLEAR also operates at sports stadiums — that’s a separate use case from airport security. The membership covers both.

What to do next

If you already have TSA PreCheck and fly from major airports, adding CLEAR is worth checking — especially if your credit card covers the fee. If you don’t have PreCheck yet, that’s the higher-impact first step: $78 for five years of expedited screening at 200+ airports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CLEAR and TSA PreCheck?

CLEAR verifies your identity at the airport using biometrics, letting you skip the ID check line. TSA PreCheck is a government program that gives you a faster security screening lane. They solve different parts of the checkpoint — you can use one, the other, or both together.

Can I use CLEAR without TSA PreCheck?

Yes. CLEAR moves you through the ID verification step. Without PreCheck, you then join the regular TSA screening queue. You save time on the ID step but not on the screening step.

How much does CLEAR Plus cost in 2026?

CLEAR Plus costs $199 per year for individuals. American Express Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders receive a full annual credit. Delta Diamond and Platinum Medallion members also get free or discounted access.

Does stacking CLEAR and PreCheck actually save time?

At busy airports, yes — significantly. CLEAR handles the ID line (10–15 minutes) and PreCheck handles the screening line (10–20 minutes). Together, your checkpoint time can drop from 30+ minutes to under 5 minutes on a busy travel day.

Is CLEAR available at every airport?

No. CLEAR operates at about 50+ airports as of 2026, focused on major hubs. Check alclear.com for the current location list before assuming your airport participates.
