CLEAR Family Membership: Adding Kids and Spouse in 2026
CLEAR Plus Family Plan adds adults for $70/year each. Kids under 18 are always free. Here's how enrollment, adding members, and removing them actually works.
TL;DR
CLEAR Plus charges $209/year for the primary member and $70/year for each additional adult under the Family Plan. Children under 18 are always free — they use the lane with an enrolled parent, no enrollment required. Kids who turn 18 become adults and need their own membership.
At a glance
- Primary CLEAR Plus membership: $209/year
- Additional adult family members: +$70/year each
- Children under 18: Free (no separate enrollment needed)

How CLEAR family pricing actually works
CLEAR Plus uses a primary-plus-add-on structure. One person holds the primary membership at the standard $209/year rate. Additional adults in the family are added at a discounted rate of $70 per person per year.
Here’s what various family configurations cost at standard rates:
| Family size | Adults | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|
| Solo traveler | 1 adult | $209 |
| Couple | 2 adults | $209 + $70 = $279 |
| Family of 3 (2 adults + 1 child under 18) | 2 adults | $279 |
| Family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids under 18) | 2 adults | $279 |
| Family of 4 (all adults) | 4 adults | $209 + ($70 × 3) = $419 |
Children under 18 do not add to the cost regardless of how many you have. The $70 add-on rate applies only to adults.
If any family members qualify for independent discounts — through their own Amex Platinum card, airline status, or employer benefit — it may be cheaper for them to enroll as a separate primary member than to be added under your Family Plan. A $70 Family Plan add-on costs more than an Amex Platinum credit-covered primary membership ($10 out of pocket) for someone who holds that card independently. See our article on free CLEAR plus credit cards for the full discount picture.
Children under 18: the free lane
One of CLEAR’s most useful features for families is that children under 18 are always free. They don’t need:
- Their own CLEAR membership
- Their own biometric enrollment
- Any registration in the CLEAR app
You simply bring them through the CLEAR lane with you. At the pod, you verify your own identity via iris scan or fingerprint, and your children accompany you. The CLEAR ambassador will wave them through with you.
This works at every CLEAR-equipped airport and venue. There’s no age minimum — you can bring an infant, a toddler, or a teenager through the CLEAR lane without any additional paperwork or fees.
When children turn 18
On a child’s 18th birthday, CLEAR treats them as an adult. They can no longer use a parent’s membership for free. At that point, you have two options:
- Add them to your Family Plan for $70/year (they’ll need to complete biometric enrollment at a pod)
- They can enroll independently as a primary member at $209/year (or at a discounted rate if they have qualifying airline status or a credit card benefit of their own)
If you’re traveling the week someone turns 18, plan ahead — their free access ends at enrollment, not at some future renewal date.
How to add a spouse or adult family member
Adding an adult to your CLEAR account is done through the CLEAR app or website, not at the airport pod itself — though the new member will need to complete an in-person biometric enrollment step at a pod before they can use the lanes.
The step-by-step process is outlined in the howTo section above. The key things to know:
- The invitation is sent to the family member’s email address. They must accept it and create their own CLEAR login.
- The $70/year charge goes to the primary member’s payment method on file — the add-on doesn’t pay separately.
- Biometric enrollment must be done at a CLEAR pod in person. It takes about 5 minutes and is required before the lane access is active.
- The enrolled family member will have their own login and app access, but their account is linked to the primary membership.
In-person biometric enrollment for family members
Every new CLEAR member — including Family Plan add-ons — must complete biometric enrollment at a CLEAR pod in person. Remote enrollment isn’t available.
At the pod, a CLEAR ambassador will:
- Verify the new member’s government-issued ID
- Guide them through an iris scan (both eyes) and fingerprint capture
- Confirm the enrollment is tied to their CLEAR account
- Activate their membership in the system
The process takes about 5 minutes for an adult. Children under 18 do not go through this process — they just accompany the enrolled parent.
Pods are located at every CLEAR-equipped airport, typically near the security entrance. You can find the nearest pod location through the CLEAR app. Most major airports have multiple pods.
How to remove a family member from your account
If a family member no longer needs CLEAR access — or if you no longer want to pay the $70 add-on — you can remove them through your account management settings in the CLEAR app or on the CLEAR website.
Removing a family member mid-year typically cancels their access immediately without a refund for the remaining portion of the year. Check CLEAR’s current billing terms in your account before removing, as proration policies can change.
What happens if accounts need to be separated
If two adults who share a CLEAR Family Plan separate, the family add-on structure doesn’t transfer cleanly. The add-on member’s access is tied to the primary account — they can’t simply take their $70 slot to a new account.
After a separation, the add-on member would need to enroll as a new primary member ($209/year, or at a discounted rate if they have a qualifying card or status). Their biometric data is already captured from their original enrollment — they just need to link it to a new account when they visit a pod.
The primary member can remove the former family add-on from their account at any time through account settings.
How family CLEAR interacts with TSA PreCheck
CLEAR and TSA PreCheck are separate programs. Enrolling a family member in CLEAR doesn’t give them PreCheck. Enrolling in PreCheck doesn’t give them CLEAR. They stack independently.
For families with children 12 and under: TSA PreCheck rules allow children 12 and under to go through the PreCheck lane with an enrolled parent, similar to how CLEAR handles children. But the age cutoffs differ — CLEAR is under 18 free, PreCheck is 12 and under free. A 15-year-old uses CLEAR free but needs their own PreCheck enrollment (or goes through standard security without a parent’s help in the PreCheck lane).
For full family coverage at every security step: adults should carry both CLEAR and PreCheck. For teenagers 13–17: CLEAR covers them free (with parent in the CLEAR lane), but they’ll need their own PreCheck for the expedited screening lane.
Our clear vs precheck guide covers how the two programs fit together in more detail.
Common pitfalls
- Forgetting in-person enrollment for add-ons. Adding a family member online is only the first step. Their lane access isn’t active until they physically complete biometric enrollment at a pod. Don’t assume they’re ready to go on your next trip without confirming.
- Not checking if the add-on has independent discounts. A $70 add-on is more expensive than a $10/year Amex Platinum-covered primary membership. If your family member has their own qualifying card or status, they may be better off enrolling independently.
- Assuming children 18+ are still free. The free access ends at 18. Plan ahead if a child is approaching that birthday before a major trip.
- Paying for add-ons at full primary rate. The Family Plan add-on rate is $70/year — significantly less than the $209 primary rate. Make sure you’re adding them as a family add-on, not enrolling them as an independent new primary member if you’re paying on their behalf.
- Expecting removal refunds. Removing a family member mid-year typically doesn’t generate a prorated refund. Cancel at renewal time rather than mid-cycle if timing allows.
What to do next
If you already have CLEAR Plus and your spouse or an adult family member travels with you regularly, the $70 Family Plan add-on is straightforward value. Compare it against their independent discount options first — if they hold an Amex Platinum, enrolling them separately costs only $10/year and may be the better choice.

Frequently asked questions
Do children need their own CLEAR membership?
No. Children under 18 are always free and use the CLEAR lane with an enrolled parent. No biometric enrollment, no additional fee. They simply accompany the adult through the pod.
How much does the CLEAR Family Plan cost?
The primary CLEAR Plus membership is $209/year. Each additional adult family member costs $70/year. A couple pays $279/year; a family of four adults pays $419/year.
At what age does a child need their own CLEAR membership?
At 18. On their 18th birthday, a child is classified as an adult by CLEAR and can no longer use the parent’s account for free. They must be added as a Family Plan adult ($70/year) or enroll independently.
Can I add a family member who doesn’t live with me?
Yes. CLEAR doesn’t verify shared residency. Any family member can be added to your Family Plan. They’ll need to complete their own biometric enrollment at a CLEAR pod before using the lanes.
What happens to family access if I cancel my CLEAR membership?
Family add-on access is tied to the primary membership. Canceling the primary account cancels all family add-on access at the same time. Add-ons do not continue independently.
Can a removed family member re-enroll later?
Yes. Their biometric data is on file. They can create a new account and re-link their biometrics at a pod. They would enroll as a new primary member ($209/year, or at a discounted rate if they have qualifying card or airline status).
