Global Entry Conditional Approval: Next Steps Explained

Global Entry conditional approval means you passed the background check — but you still need an interview within 365 days. Here's exactly what to do next.

TL;DR

Global Entry conditional approval means CBP cleared your background check and is ready to approve you — but your membership is not active yet. You have 365 days to complete an in-person interview. Book your interview appointment as soon as possible, because popular enrollment centers fill up 4–6 months out.

At a glance

  • What it means: Background check passed; interview still required
  • Can you use Global Entry/PreCheck now? No — not until after the interview
  • Time to complete interview: 365 days from conditional approval date
  • Interview options: Enrollment center, enrollment on arrival, or MPC kiosk
  • What if you miss the deadline? Reapply and pay $120 again
  • Biggest mistake: Waiting months to schedule, then missing the window

What conditional approval actually means

When your TTP account shows “Conditionally Approved,” it means CBP has completed its initial background check and found no automatic disqualifying factors. The agency is, in effect, telling you: “Your application looks good — come in so we can verify your identity, take your biometrics, and finalize enrollment.”

Conditional approval is not final approval. You cannot use Global Entry kiosks when returning from international trips. Your PASSID — the number that activates TSA PreCheck — has not been issued yet. The membership is in a holding state until the interview is complete.

This is a source of confusion for many applicants. Getting the “conditionally approved” notification feels like a finish line, but it’s really a starting gun for the next step.

You have exactly 365 days

The clock starts on the date your conditional approval was granted — visible in your TTP dashboard. You have exactly 365 days to schedule and complete the interview. There is no extension, no grace period, and no exceptions for scheduling delays.

If day 365 passes without a completed interview, your conditional approval is revoked. To get Global Entry, you would need to:

  1. Submit a new application from scratch
  2. Pay the $120 fee again
  3. Wait for the background check to run again
  4. Get a new conditional approval
  5. Schedule and complete the interview again

That’s months of extra time and $120 out of pocket — entirely avoidable by booking your interview the day you receive conditional approval.

Your three options for completing the interview

Option 1: Schedule at a CBP enrollment center

This is the standard route. Log into ttp.cbp.dhs.gov, select your application, and click “Schedule Interview.” You’ll see enrollment centers near you with available appointment slots.

The scheduling reality at major airports: Los Angeles, New York (JFK and Newark), Miami, Chicago, and Atlanta enrollment centers typically show waits of 4–6 months or more. The demand is high and slots go fast.

The workaround that actually helps: Look at enrollment centers at smaller airports within a 1–3 hour drive. A regional hub 90 minutes away that has a slot in 3 weeks is usually worth the drive versus waiting 5 months at a major airport down the street. Sort available enrollment centers by earliest available date rather than by distance.

Option 2: Enrollment on arrival at the airport

Enrollment on arrival (EOA) is one of the most underused options for completing the Global Entry interview. When you return to the U.S. from an international trip, you can stop at a designated CBP booth in the international arrivals area and complete your interview on the spot — no separate appointment needed.

What you need for enrollment on arrival:

  • Conditional approval (must already be in your TTP account)
  • Your valid passport
  • Second photo ID
  • Proof of address
  • A return flight through a participating airport

Not every airport has the EOA program. CBP maintains a list of participating airports at cbp.gov/global-entry/enrollment-on-arrival. Major hubs like JFK, LAX, ORD, and MIA are typically on the list, but confirm before your trip.

If you have international travel already planned within your 365-day window, EOA may be the fastest and most convenient path to completing your interview.

Option 3: Mobile Passport Control kiosks

At some airports, CBP’s Mobile Passport Control program offers a separate expedited entry lane. This isn’t a direct substitute for the Global Entry interview, but at certain airports CBP uses these checkpoints as part of enrollment processing. Check the cbp.gov MPC page for current information about how this intersects with Global Entry enrollment at specific locations.

What happens between now and the interview

You’re in a waiting period — your application is active, your background check is done, and you just need to get to the enrollment center. During this time:

  • Your KTN for TSA PreCheck is not yet active. If you want PreCheck lane access before your interview, you can apply for standalone TSA PreCheck in the meantime.
  • Your conditional approval letter is available in your TTP account — print it or save it. You’ll need it at the interview.
  • Log in to TTP periodically to check for any messages or status changes on your application.

Booking strategy: don’t wait, don’t overthink

The single most important thing you can do with a conditional approval is book your interview appointment immediately — even if the available slot is 4–5 months away.

Here’s why: slots fill up on a rolling basis. The appointment that’s 4 months out today might be fully booked in 2 weeks. By booking now, you lock in a spot. You can always check back for cancellations if you want an earlier date — cancel-and-rebook only when you have a confirmed alternative.

Practical tips:

  • Check multiple enrollment centers when searching, not just the one closest to you
  • Smaller-city and regional airport centers almost always have earlier availability than major hubs
  • Log in to TTP on weekday mornings — newly opened cancellation slots appear throughout the week
  • If your international travel is coming up, check whether your return airport offers enrollment on arrival and flag it in your travel plans

What the interview involves

The Global Entry interview itself is short — typically 10–15 minutes. A CBP officer:

  • Verifies your identity documents
  • Takes your fingerprints and a new photo
  • Asks a short set of questions about employment, travel history, and background
  • Issues a decision (usually immediate approval)

Bring your valid passport, a second photo ID, your conditional approval letter, and proof of current address. Read the full interview guide for the complete list of what to expect and common questions asked.

If your conditional approval expires

If 365 days pass and you didn’t complete the interview, your conditional approval is closed. Your TTP account will reflect this status change. You’ll need to:

  1. Submit a new Global Entry application at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov
  2. Pay the $120 fee again
  3. Wait for CBP to run a new background check
  4. Wait for new conditional approval
  5. Then schedule and complete the interview within the new 365-day window

There is no way to extend or reinstate an expired conditional approval. It is genuinely worth paying attention to that expiration date.

Common pitfalls

  • Not booking immediately after receiving conditional approval. The longer you wait, the fewer slots are available, and the more likely you are to bump up against the 365-day deadline.
  • Only checking the nearest enrollment center. The biggest bottleneck in Global Entry is appointment availability at major-city centers. Checking 5–10 enrollment centers across your region takes 2 minutes and often reveals much earlier slots.
  • Assuming conditional approval means you can use PreCheck. It doesn’t. Your PASSID and KTN are issued only after the final interview approval.
  • Missing the 365-day window. There’s no extension. If you’re getting close to the deadline and can’t get a center appointment in time, use enrollment on arrival on your next international trip.
  • Canceling your appointment without a backup. If you need to change your appointment, book a new slot first before canceling the current one.

What to do next

Open your TTP account right now and note your conditional approval date. Calculate your 365-day deadline. Then click “Schedule Interview” and book the earliest slot you can find — regardless of the enrollment center’s distance from you. If you have international travel coming up in the next few months, check whether your return airport offers enrollment on arrival as an even faster option.

Once your interview is done and CBP issues final approval, add your new PASSID to all your airline profiles as your KTN for TSA PreCheck. It’s the same number for both programs.
